How to sell Canva templates
Canva templates are one of the easiest digital products to start: you design once, and every buyer gets their own copy. But Canva's license has rules about Pro elements and file types that trip up new sellers. Here is how to do it properly, from idea to delivery.

Short answer: design an original template that solves one job for a specific person, share it from Canva as a template link (not a view or edit link), and sell a short PDF or delivery page that contains that link. If your template uses Canva Pro elements, you must deliver it as a template link only, never as a PDF of the design. Price it by the time it saves, and test the whole purchase yourself before you launch.
The short answer
The buyer is paying for a ready-made starting point: a media kit they can fill in tonight, a planner that is already laid out, a set of posts in their brand colors. The more specific the job, the easier it is to sell. "Instagram templates" competes with everyone. "Instagram carousel templates for dog groomers" competes with almost no one.
Canva's rules for selling templates
Canva's Help Center and Content License Agreement set the rules. In plain words:
| Your template uses | How you may sell it |
|---|---|
| Only free Canva elements and your own photos or graphics | As a Canva template link, or as a PDF or other file |
| Any Canva Pro element, photo or font | Only as a Canva template link, never as a PDF or other file, flattened or not |
| An existing Canva template, unchanged | Not at all. Design your own, or change it substantially |
| Canva elements on their own, such as a sticker pack of Canva graphics | Not at all. Canva content cannot be sold on a standalone basis |
Canva can update its license, so read the current Help Center page and Content License Agreement before you list your first template. If you would rather Canva handle sales, its Canva Creators program pays creators whose templates are published in Canva's own library.
What to make: ideas that sell
Start from your audience. If they ask "can you share your template?", you already have a product. If not, pick a job your followers do every week:
- Social media kits for a specific business type: salons, cafes, real estate agents, fitness coaches.
- Creator media kits and rate sheets. Our guide on what to include in a media kit shows the sections buyers need.
- Planners and trackers: content calendars, budgets, meal plans, habit trackers.
- Small business printables: menus, price lists, gift certificates, loyalty cards.
- Event templates: invitations, signs and timelines for weddings or parties.
- Resumes and portfolios for a specific field.
- E-book and lead magnet layouts for coaches and course creators.
For deciding between ideas, what a creator should sell first has a six-factor score.
Build the template step by step
- Start from a blank design at the right size, not from someone else's template.
- Set up a simple style: two fonts, three to five colors, and consistent spacing. Buyers will change colors, so make the layout work in any palette.
- Use placeholder text that teaches. "Your headline, 5 to 8 words" helps more than lorem ipsum.
- Group and name elements so buyers can move sections without breaking them.
- Decide free or Pro. If you want buyers on free Canva accounts to use everything, use only free elements and your own images.
- Test it as a buyer. Open the template link in a second Canva account, change the text, colors and photos, and make sure nothing breaks.
Deliver it with a template link
Canva's share menu has several link types. For selling, use the template link: each person who opens it gets their own copy, and your original stays untouched. A view link only lets people look. An edit link lets everyone change your original, which is the most common delivery mistake.
Then make a one-page delivery PDF or page with:
- The template link, as a clear button.
- Three steps: sign in to Canva (a free account works), click the link, then select "Use template".
- Whether any Pro elements are included.
- How to reach you if something does not work.
- Your license terms, such as personal or business use, no reselling or sharing the link.
A Loresta Page can deliver this automatically: a digital product there can be a file, a private post or a link, sent as soon as the buyer pays (payments are open to US creators for now). On the Free plan Loresta keeps 8% of each payment plus Stripe's processing fee, so a $12.00 template leaves you about $10.33.
Price it
Price by the time it saves and how specific it is, not by how long it took you. A single post template saves a buyer an hour. A complete brand kit or a 30-page planner saves days. Look at what similar templates sell for, pick where yours sits, and launch. Bundles often sell better than single templates, because buyers want a complete set. Where to sell it
| Where | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Etsy | Buyers already searching for templates | Listing and transaction fees, and lots of competition on the same search terms |
| Your own page in your bio link | Selling to your followers, keeping buyer details, lower fees | You bring the traffic yourself |
| Canva Creators | Earning from Canva's own library without selling | Canva decides what is accepted and how you are paid |
Many sellers do both: Etsy for search traffic, and their own page for followers. For a full checklist of what any digital product needs, see selling digital products.
Write a listing that answers questions
Most refund requests come from surprises. Your listing should say:
- It is a Canva template, not a file for Photoshop or Word.
- A free Canva account is needed, and whether any Pro elements are included.
- Exactly what is included: number of pages, sizes, and any bonus items.
- What can be edited: text, colors, photos, layout.
- How delivery works, and that it is instant.
- Your license: who may use it and for what.
Show the template in use with your own example content, and include one image of the editing screen so buyers know what they are getting.
Mistakes that cause refunds
- Sharing an edit link. Every buyer changes your original. Always use the template link.
- Selling a PDF of a design with Pro elements. It breaks Canva's license. Deliver Pro templates only as template links.
- Reselling a Canva template with small tweaks. Design your own.
- Hiding that Pro is needed. Buyers on free accounts feel tricked. Say it in the title or first line.
- No instructions. A three-step note prevents most "the link does not work" messages.

Questions creators ask next
Direct answers that keep the plan realistic.
Is it legal to sell Canva templates?
Yes, if you follow Canva's license. Canva's Help Center says you can sell templates you design, but templates that use Pro content must be shared as Canva template links, never as a PDF or other file. You cannot resell Canva's own templates as they are, or sell Canva content on its own.
Can I use Canva Pro elements in templates I sell?
Yes, but only when you deliver the template as a Canva template link. Canva's Help Center says templates with Pro content cannot be sold as a PDF or other file type, flattened or not. Buyers without Canva Pro may need to pay for or replace those elements.
Do buyers need Canva Pro to use my template?
They need a Canva account, which is free. If your template uses only free elements and your own images, they can use all of it without Pro. If it uses Pro elements, buyers without Pro may see them locked. Say in your listing which one your template is.
How do I send a Canva template to a buyer?
In Canva, share the design as a template link, which gives each person their own copy instead of access to your original. Put that link in a short PDF or on a delivery page that buyers get right after paying, with simple instructions for opening it.
How much should I charge for a Canva template?
Price by the time it saves the buyer and how specialized it is, then test. A single social post template saves less time than a full brand kit or a 30-page planner. Look at what similar templates sell for and decide where yours sits. Our guide on pricing a digital product has a worksheet.
Can I sell Canva templates on Etsy?
Many people do. Etsy charges its own listing and transaction fees, and you deliver a PDF containing your template link as an instant download. Selling from your own page means fewer fees and a direct relationship with buyers, but you bring your own traffic.
